Bangladesh Marks Historic First at Cannes with Adnan Al Rajeev’s Short Film ‘Ali’

In a groundbreaking moment for Bangladeshi cinema, Ali, a 15-minute short film directed by Adnan Al Rajeev, received a Special Mention from the Short Films Jury at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. This marks Bangladesh’s first-ever official recognition at Cannes.

Set in a coastal town where women are forbidden to sing, Ali follows a teenager who enters a singing competition in hopes of leaving for the city. However, to participate, he conceals his true voice—one that mimics a woman’s—in a haunting act of self-erasure. Starring first-time actor Al Amin, the film explores themes of repression, identity, and the cost of silence. Read the full article on The Business Standard.

A Voice for the Silenced

Produced by Tanveer Hossain and Kristine De Leon under katalog, the film also marks the production company’s first international win. The award was announced on May 24 at 6:40 PM local time at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, during the festival’s official closing ceremony.

Upon receiving the recognition, Adnan Al Rajeev delivered an emotional statement.

“This film is dedicated to people who are oppressed and forced to stay silent. This is a plea for people to make their voices heard.”

The heartfelt message resonated with the audience, who gave Rajeev a warm round of applause as he stood to accept the honor.
