Bangladesh’s Soumya Sarkar has etched his name in the record books for an unwanted reason, as he now shares the top spot for most ducks in T20 internationals alongside Ireland’s Paul Stirling.
The 31-year-old all-rounder achieved this dubious feat during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match against Sri Lanka on June 7 in Dallas. In a disappointing turn of events, Soumya fell victim to a soft dismissal in the first over of Bangladesh’s chase of 125 runs.
Despite Sarkar’s early exit, Bangladesh managed to showcase their prowess in the bowling department during the match against Sri Lanka. Initially, Sri Lanka made a strong start, with 53 runs on board within the first six overs.
However, Bangladesh staged a remarkable comeback by restricting Sri Lanka to just 124 runs in their allotted 20 overs, taking seven wickets while conceding only 71 runs in the last fourteen overs. As Bangladesh faced pressure while chasing down the target, losing both openers Soumya and Tanzid Hasan Tamim early on, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das took charge to steer their team towards victory.
Soumya Sarkar now stands at the top alongside Paul Stirling, with thirteen ducks each in T20Is. Following closely behind are India’s Rohit Sharma, Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien, and Rwanda’s Kevin Irakoze with twelve ducks apiece.
Despite this individual record, Soumya will look to bounce back stronger as he continues to contribute to Bangladesh cricket across different formats of the game.
