Bhavya Ramesh: A Jewelry Brand with a Fusion of Indian Essence & Global appeal

In a world where distinguishing brands has become increasingly challenging, we take a closer look at the imaginative power driving Bhavya Ramesh, a very unique jewelry brand that has grabbed quite an attention for its designs.

In an exclusive interview with Tinds, the brand’s proprietor and creative director Bhavya Ramesh after whole the brand is named shares her personal narrative and the exceptional vision that propels her business.

Originating from Bangalore, Bhavya’s unique design aesthetic skillfully showcases India in a universally captivating way.

From celebrities like Madonna, Shilpa Shetty, Joy Crookes, Raja Kumari to a lot of other celebrities adorn her unique jewelry pieces.

Tinds: Tell us something about where you grew up. Since you love animals, share one of your most vivid childhood memories related to them.

Bhavya Ramesh: I was born and raised in Bangalore, which is in India. I have a strong South Indian identity, and one vivid childhood memory stands out. I’ve always loved animals, especially when I was a child. I would bring home any cute puppies or street cats I found. Once, I brought home a puppy, which made my dad really angry because it was making a mess everywhere. He locked the puppy in a room, and I was upset. So, when my dad went for a shower, I locked him in the bathroom without his phone. He had to break down the door to get out, making it a memorable and amusing incident.

Tinds: What was your background in terms of studies?

Bhavya Ramesh: I come from a middle-class family. Both my parents are pretty well educated, and like most Indian parents, they placed a strong emphasis on education and grades. I began my schooling at Christ School and completed my 11th and 12th grades at Deeksha, which, if you’re familiar with the Indian education system, was an intense and challenging experience, especially with the IIT integrated program.

It almost felt like a concentration camp, and it’s surprising that I made it through. Later on, I pursued a degree in computer science engineering, and yes, I don’t have a background in design.

Tinds: What motivated you into pursuing a career in the jewelry business?

Bhavya Ramesh: The persistent desire for independence and to create something of my own drove me to realize the need for starting my own business. During my engineering studies, I came to the conclusion that engineering wasn’t my true passion. In addition, I worked for about five months after college and quickly understood that I didn’t thrive working under someone else. I wasn’t particularly obedient as a student or an employee.

Upon leaving my job, I was determined to pursue something creative and establish my own venture. To explain why I got into jewelry, right after college, I embraced a more alternative lifestyle. During a period of about two to three years when I wasn’t engaged in formal work, I explored various arts and crafts, including soap making, candle making, yoga for which I obtained certification, leather crafting, and various other pursuits.

I was trying out different things to discover my true area of interest. Eventually, I found a strong affinity for textiles and jewelry.

After my dad provided me with some investment, I decided that jewelry was the ideal option. This choice was motivated by the fact that, in the worst-case scenario, if my designs weren’t well-received, I could at least recover the investment by selling the precious metals. This wouldn’t have been the case with textiles, where I’d end up with a surplus of clothing that had personal value to me but might not be appreciated by others. So, this consideration played a crucial role in my decision.

Tinds: What has been the most challenging aspect of starting your own company? And how do you manage to maintain a certain level of growth?

Bhavya Ramesh: The most challenging aspect is gaining recognition for your unique sensibility and design language, which resonates with people, especially in the field of design.

Identifying a particular piece with its designer is one of the most difficult tasks in the design world.

In terms of the business side, delegating responsibilities to others is a significant challenge. Initially, as an entrepreneur, you tend to take on all responsibilities because it typically starts with self-belief. Letting go of these responsibilities and ensuring others can handle them is a daunting task. This transition is particularly challenging, but it is essential for consistent growth and success. With my strong team, maintaining that consistency becomes more achievable.

Tinds: How would you describe the key elements of your design style?

Bhavya Ramesh: I believe my design style would be an Indian take on surrealism. It’s contemporary in nature, not adhering to traditional Indian design, but it incorporates a distinct Indian influence. I see my design language as having a touch of surrealism that adds uniqueness to it.

Tinds: How do you believe your approach to presenting India in a more universally appreciable manner differs from traditional representations compared to other brands?

Bhavya Ramesh: I believe I’ve achieved something unique by presenting India in a tasteful way that can be appreciated by people worldwide. Traditional Indian representations can be so culturally specific that only Indians fully grasp them, but I think I’ve attempted to bridge that gap. I aim to make the world at large truly appreciate our cultural richness.

Regarding design, I follow the same approach, infusing Indian elements in a modern, contemporary manner. This approach is unlike anything that has been done before.

Everything about my brand stands out, from the design to the way India is portrayed, to the concepts we explore. It’s all distinctive because it’s entirely original, and there’s no one else doing something quite like this.

Tinds: What are the three words you’d use to describe yourself?

Bhavya Ramesh: The three words would be, confused, super emotional and a workaholic.

In fact, I’m creating a ring that I’ve named “decision rings.” This ring is meant for those moments when you find yourself in a state of confusion. You simply spin the ring, and it provides you with guidance on what to do. It’s a unique way to deal with moments of uncertainty.

Tinds: What can we expect from your company in the future?

Bhavya Ramesh: We consistently provide surprises, and we want to ensure that we deliver the unexpected on every occasion.

Tinds: Are you collaborating with any brands or just working on your own right now?

Bhavya Ramesh: Currently, I’m not considering any collaborations. The major development with my brand right now is the opening of our first concept store in Bombay. The store is quite unexpected, and I personally designed it. I believe it’s a unique concept store that you won’t find elsewhere in India. So, that’s what you should be on the lookout for at the moment. As for collaborations, there’s nothing in the works or on the horizon.

Tinds: What would you say is the most satisfying thing about running your own business?

Bhavya Ramesh: Working for myself means turning my own dreams into reality. Everything I do is for my personal vision, and I genuinely believe that without pursuing my current path, my existence would lack meaning. When I contemplate it deeply, I’m left wondering what I would do otherwise. So, the most fulfilling aspect of pursuing your own dreams and doing what you love is that there’s nothing quite like it.

Tinds: What would you advise people who are interested in coming into the same business?

Bhavya Ramesh: In our current era of extensive media coverage and the prevalence of numerous Instagram brands, I want to emphasize that if you genuinely aspire to create something unique, you must remain unwavering in your commitment, even when faced with challenges. Building something of your own isn’t a smooth journey; it often involves setbacks. While I don’t want to sound cliché, I believe that without enduring these hurdles, it’s unlikely to endure in the long run.

This principle applies not only to design but to any endeavor. The desire to pursue your passion should be so compelling that you refuse to let it go, regardless of the obstacles that may arise, remaining persistent in your pursuit.
