Nepal has gifted six acres of land in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, to Bangladesh for the construction of a Buddhist cultural center and pagoda, marking a significant step in fostering cultural and religious ties between the two nations. The announcement was made by Religious Affairs Adviser A.F.M. Khalid Hossain during the “Bodhicarya” installation ceremony at the Uttara Buddhist Temple in Dhaka.
The project, approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) with a budget of BDT 68 crore, will be managed by the Buddhist Welfare Trust under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The center aims to serve as a hub for Buddhist religious and cultural activities, underscoring Bangladesh’s historical connection to Buddhism and its commitment to promoting interfaith harmony.
A Tribute to Shared Heritage
Speaking at the event, Adviser Khalid Hossain emphasized the deep Buddhist roots in the region, dating back to the reign of Emperor Ashoka. “This initiative is a celebration of our shared heritage and our belief in a multi-dimensional, inclusive society,” he stated. The establishment of the center reflects Bangladesh’s respect for cultural diversity and its efforts to strengthen ties with neighboring Nepal.
Support for the Buddhist Community
The adviser also highlighted the government’s dedication to addressing the needs of the Buddhist community in Bangladesh, citing the recent establishment of a long-awaited cremation facility. He encouraged the community to propose further initiatives, assuring them of continued government support.
Promoting Harmony and Unity
Khalid Hossain called for collective efforts to promote peace and harmony. “The Buddhist center in Lumbini symbolizes our commitment to communal harmony and unity, not just in Bangladesh but across the region. It reflects our shared aspiration for a peaceful and inclusive society,” he said.
Strengthening Regional Ties
This collaboration between Nepal and Bangladesh stands as a testament to their dedication to cultural preservation and interfaith dialogue. By creating a space for spiritual and cultural exchange in Lumbini, the project reinforces the shared values of unity, inclusivity, and mutual respect on both regional and global levels.
The Buddhist cultural center in Lumbini is expected to become a landmark of religious and cultural significance, enhancing bilateral relations and celebrating the profound heritage of Buddhism that connects Nepal and Bangladesh.
