The wait is over for fans of Christopher Nolan. Universal Studios has officially announced that the visionary director’s next project will be The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s iconic epic poem chronicling Odysseus’ harrowing journey home after the Trojan War.
Touted as a “mythic action epic,” the film will be brought to life using cutting-edge IMAX film technology, marking the first time Homer’s foundational saga will grace IMAX screens. Set to release worldwide on July 17, 2026, the film promises to be an unparalleled cinematic experience.
The star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron.
Known for blending historical depth with technical mastery, Nolan’s previous works, including the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and period drama The Prestige, have established him as a storyteller capable of tackling diverse subjects. However, The Odyssey presents an exciting shift into the realm of mythology, gods, and monsters—territory Nolan has yet to explore.

Although Homer’s Odyssey has seen numerous adaptations, including the 1954 classic Ulysses and the Coen brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Nolan’s interpretation promises a fresh, immersive take on the legendary tale.
Interestingly, Nolan’s connection to Trojan War stories dates back to when he was considered for 2004’s Troy, a film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Brad Pitt.
This announcement caps an incredible year for Nolan, who won his first-ever Academy Awards for Oppenheimer, taking home Best Picture and Best Director, and was recently knighted by King Charles.
With The Odyssey, Nolan is set to redefine yet another genre, delivering a cinematic odyssey worthy of its name.
