GMB Akash never intended to be just a photographer. His journey began with a simple click of his father’s old Yashica camera, but that spark quickly turned into a burning purpose.
In a world obsessed with perfection, Akash chases the truth.
He has traveled to over 50 countries and his work has been featured in over 100 major international publications, including National Geographic, Vogue, TIME, and The Guardian. But his lens doesn’t just capture faces; it captures the raw, unfiltered soul of humanity. Growing up near a red-light district in Bangladesh, he saw what others ignored. He decided then and there: his camera would be a weapon to fight silence.
The Mission: He doesn’t see “subjects.” He sees people who deserve to be seen, heard, and honored.
The numbers that matter.

Before he owned a professional camera, Akash owned a perspective.
His childhood was a masterclass in societal inequality. He watched sex workers endure brutality, domestic workers face ridicule, and the marginalized stripped of dignity. These weren’t just scenes to him; they were injustices.
He learned a hard truth: Dignity is not always distributed equally.
Akash works differently. He doesn’t swoop in, snap a photo, and leave. He builds trust.
The turning point came during a conversation with a sex worker who asked him:
“Do you think my child will recognize me in heaven?”
That question shattered him. It shifted his focus from capturing pain to capturing resilience. It wasn’t about the tragedy anymore; it was about the human spirit surviving it. This profound empathy led to him being the first Bangladeshi selected for the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass.

Despite global fame, Akash felt empty. The photos were powerful, but the lives of the people in them remained unchanged.
So, he flipped the script. He moved from “witnessing” to “building.”
He began using his own income to create sustainable economic solutions for the people he photographed.
The Goal: Empower parents to earn, so their children can stop working and start learning.

In 2013, he founded the First Light Institute of Photography (formerly GMB Akash Institute of Photography).
This isn’t just a school; it’s a cycle of good. Students from all over the world come to learn from the master, and every tuition fee goes directly to funding the education of underprivileged children.
He teaches his students one core philosophy:
“Why are you taking this photo? Purpose is the true art.”

After nearly 25 years, GMB Akash hasn’t slowed down. He proves that art is not passive.
His journey is a blueprint for the future of storytelling: Look closely, listen deeply, and act boldly.
