Shehab Shahariar: Engineering a Spectacular Global Identity With Digital Tools

In Bangladesh’s evolving musical landscape, very few bands attempt to reshape the genre itself. Even fewer succeed. The band Opartheeb, with symphonic metal as their genre, stands as a rare example of a group that chose depth over speed, craft over trends, and identity over imitation.
Blending heavy distortion, orchestral arrangements, and Bengali emotional storytelling, Opartheeb has carved a sound that feels both cinematic and grounded. Their music doesn’t chase virality; it builds atmosphere, asks difficult questions, and reflects where they come from. Unlike many contemporaries who stay within the safe confines of symphonic metal, Opartheeb ventured into the complex territory of symphonic metal, a genre demanding precision, classical sensibility, and raw power.
This is the story of a band rooted in self-discovery, shaped by discipline, and defined by a purpose that spans continents—from the snowy campuses of Ottawa to the vibrant stages of Dhaka.

Opartheeb was formed in the summer of 2008 at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. It began not as a commercial project, but as a creative quest among friends in the diaspora. The founding members—international students and first-generation Canadians—were united by a shared need to express something deeper than conventional rock structures allowed.
The lineup that solidified this vision includes
From the beginning, the Opartheeb has resisted easy categorization. Being based abroad gave them a unique perspective—a longing for their roots that manifested in their sound. They didn’t want to sound like just another Western act. Instead, they explored how symphonic metal could coexist with Bengali emotion, language, and cultural memory. This foundation of self-discovery continues to shape their music today, bridging the gap between their lives in Canada and their soul in Bangladesh.

For any diaspora band, the ultimate dream is to perform on home soil. For Opartheeb, this dream materialized in January 2024 with their “Homecoming” concert at the Liberation War Museum in Dhaka. Organized by Get Set Rock, this event was meant to be a celebration of their 15-year journey.
However, the event carried a heavy emotional weight. Just days after arriving in Bangladesh for the concert, the father of bassist Syed Ahsan Ali and drummer Syed Adnan Ali passed away. It was a devastating blow. Their parents had been ardent supporters of the band since its inception. Despite the personal tragedy, the brothers insisted on performing, dedicating the concert to their late father’s memory.
The concert featured collaborations with local bands like Shonar Bangla Circus and Kaaktaal, but it was Opartheeb’s performance that stole the night. They played tracks like Bangal and Joddha, proving that their music was not just a studio creation but a powerful live force. This resilience in the face of loss cemented their reputation not just as musicians, but as artists deeply committed to their craft and their audience.
Opartheeb’s debut album, Abchha Neel Kona, represents the culmination of years of evolution. It is not a collection of disconnected tracks, but a cohesive musical journey inspired by Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot “. The title itself reflects a sense of distance and perspective—looking back at one’s origins from far away, much like the band looks back at Bangladesh from Canada.
The album was crafted under the guidance of Sazzad Arefeen, a legendary figure in the Bangladeshi rock scene and founder of Guitar Never Lies. His decades-long influence helped sharpen the band’s orchestral depth and sense of control, allowing Abchha Neel Kona to unfold with clarity, weight, and intention.

In an era dominated by quick releases and algorithm-driven music, Opartheeb represents an alternative path. Their journey proves that heavy music from Bangladesh can be thoughtful, cinematic, and culturally grounded without losing its power.
They are not redefining metal by being louder. They are redefining it by being intentional. The symphonic metal band, Opartheeb, is a reminder that roots are not limitations—they are foundations. Whether performing with legends like Warfaze, Artcell, Shironamhin and Chirkut in Canada or standing on a stage in Dhaka, Opartheeb carries the flag of Bengali symphonic metal with pride and precision.
