Shalini Passi: From Fabulous Lives to a Fabulous Legacy

Shalini Passi is not just a name in the art world—she’s a force behind it. While audiences may recognize her from Netflix’s Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives or her appearance on Bigg Boss 18, her true legacy lies in her dedication to the arts, advocacy, and the next generation. In New Delhi, she’s not just admired—she’s setting the standard for a meaningful, creative life.
A celebrated art patron, fashion icon, and UNICEF India Children’s Champion, Shalini is redefining what it means to live with purpose. From curating bold exhibitions and founding platforms like MASH India and the Shalini Passi Art Foundation, to donating her acting earnings entirely to support early childhood development programs in Bihar, she blends luxury with social impact in powerful, tangible ways.
TINDS: Tell us about your childhood and background.
Shalini Passi: Art has always been part of who I am. I began painting when I was young and explored different materials early on. I was lucky to meet incredible artists like M.F. Husain and Manjit Bawa while still in school. Their energy really inspired me. One teacher, Mr. Bishamber Khanna, truly shaped my creativity and helped me refine my style.
TINDS: What sparked your love for collecting art?
Shalini: It grew naturally from being an artist myself. Collecting is emotional—it’s about what moves you. I look for pieces that speak to today’s world and push boundaries. Every piece I collect has a story that challenges or uplifts.
TINDS: How do you choose the artists you collect? Any favorites?
Shalini: I focus on originality and fresh perspectives. I’m especially drawn to artists who break the mold. One I admire is Anita Dube. She uses materials like velvet and glass to explore memory and identity in bold, unexpected ways.
TINDS: What was your experience like on Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives?
Shalini: It was honestly so fun! Getting to know everyone behind the scenes brought new insights into their lives and mine. It gave me a deeper appreciation for how storytelling happens in different forms.
TINDS: How can art drive social change?
Shalini: Art can reveal the truth and spark action. I think of Chittaprosad Bhattacharya, who captured the suffering during the Bengal famine. His work made people see what they wanted to ignore. Art can speak louder than words when it comes to justice.
TINDS: Can you share a meaningful moment with the Delhi Society for the Welfare of Special Children?
Shalini: Every moment there reminds me why inclusion in art matters. It’s not just about giving access—it’s about giving everyone the right to express themselves and be seen for who they are.
TINDS: How did MASH India begin, and what’s your vision for it?
Shalini: I started MASH India to connect art, fashion, and design. It’s a platform where young, creative minds can collaborate and show their work. I want to build a global space that celebrates bold, interdisciplinary talent.
TINDS: What’s the mission behind the Shalini Passi Art Foundation?
Shalini: Our goal is to promote contemporary art in India. We support artists through grants, exhibitions, and education. Most importantly, we aim to make art more accessible to people from all walks of life.

TINDS: What do you think about the future of South Asian art globally?
Shalini: It’s rising fast! South Asian artists are creating amazing work with deep cultural roots and fresh ideas. I believe the world is ready to hear our stories—and we’re ready to tell them.
TINDS: Which South Asian artists should we keep an eye on?
Shalini: There are so many doing phenomenal work! We need more platforms to showcase these talents and give them the spotlight they deserve.
TINDS: How would you describe your personal style?
Shalini: Bold, elegant, and full of art! I’m definitely a maximalist. I love pieces that reflect creativity, color, and detail. I believe in making a visual statement wherever I go.
TINDS: Tell us a fun fact about you!
Shalini: Even my tea sets are curated! I think life is better when everything around you brings beauty and sparks imagination.
TINDS: If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be?
Shalini: Frida Kahlo, without a doubt. I’d love to talk about how she turned pain into power. Her honesty and creativity still inspire so many of us.
TINDS: How do you relax after a long day?
Shalini: Art and music. Whether it’s painting or just being surrounded by inspiring work, it calms me. I also love reading and spending time in creative spaces.
TINDS: Any upcoming projects or exhibitions?
Shalini: Yes! I just curated “Fragments of the Future“ under MASH India for Ajio Luxe WKND in January 2025. It was part of ELLE List 2025. The show challenged ideas of postmodern Indian art using new media and unique perspectives—it was a real conversation starter.
Shalini Passi is more than a tastemaker—she embodies the very spirit of art and fashion. She proves that art isn’t just decorative; it’s transformative. Through her creative platforms, philanthropic work, and personal vision, she uplifts emerging voices, sparks meaningful dialogue, and redefines how South Asian art is seen and celebrated.
