Overseas Citizen of India · USA
For a US citizen of Indian origin, the OCI card replaces a lifetime of visa applications with one lifelong entry-and-residence right — and in 2026 the whole system went digital, with new fees and a strict passport-update deadline you can’t afford to miss. ✓ ociservices.gov.in

OCI in 2026: What Changed and Why It Matters
India’s Ministry of Home Affairs notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 on 30 April 2026, and the changes are the most significant the Overseas Citizen of India scheme has seen in years. The entire application, renewal, and passport-update process moved to a fully digital, online-first system through ociservices.gov.in, applicants can now receive either a physical card or a purely digital e-OCI, and India introduced a single, standardized global fee of USD 275 for a fresh application — replacing a patchwork of country-by-country pricing that used to leave applicants guessing. The Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card scheme was also formally rescinded as of 31 December 2025, and any remaining PIO cardholders are now automatically treated as OCI cardholders.
This guide walks through exactly who qualifies for OCI, the three eligibility paths, the current digital application process, the new fee structure, and a compliance deadline that has already caught out plenty of longtime cardholders: the mandatory 90-day window to update your passport details after any renewal. What an OCI Card Actually Gives You
An OCI card grants a lifelong, multiple-entry visa-equivalent status to visit India for any purpose and any length of stay, exemption from the police reporting requirements that apply to most other foreign nationals, and broad parity with Non-Resident Indians on economic, financial, and education matters — though not the right to buy agricultural or plantation land, vote in Indian elections, or hold public office. Roughly 5.5 million people worldwide hold OCI status today, and the scheme was created specifically to give the Indian diaspora a practical alternative to renewing tourist visas indefinitely.
Which Path Applies to You?
Click one — eligibility for OCI Card runs through three different doors.
Former Indian Citizen
You held an Indian passport and later gave it up
Descendant
Your parents or grandparents were Indian citizens
Spouse
Married to an Indian citizen or existing OCI holder
It’s worth noting one important exclusion: under the OCI scheme, people who are or have been citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh — or whose parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent was a citizen of those two countries — are not eligible for OCI status, regardless of which of the three paths above might otherwise seem to apply. This is a longstanding statutory restriction, not a 2026 change, but it trips up enough applicants with mixed family histories that it’s worth stating plainly before you begin.

The Passport-Link Trap
OCI is not dual citizenship — you keep your US passport, with OCI as a lifelong visa-equivalent status. Always travel on the passport currently linked to your OCI record. Under the 2026 rules, you must update your new passport details on the OCI portal within 90 days (three months) of issuance, or face a USD 25 late fee.
This rule catches even experienced OCI holders off guard because it’s easy to assume a passport renewal is purely a US State Department matter with no bearing on your OCI status. It isn’t. If you’re under 20 or over 50 years old, the passport-update rule is the only thing you need to do — you upload your new passport photo page and a recent photograph to the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal, and no physical card reissue or biometric visit is required. Outside that age bracket, a passport renewal generally still triggers a physical card reissue requirement. Either way, missing the three-month window means paying USD 25 to catch up, and travelling on an OCI card linked to an old, cancelled passport can create real friction at Indian immigration counters.

Do This, Not That
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an OCI card the same as Indian citizenship?
No. OCI does not grant Indian citizenship or dual citizenship. It is a lifelong multiple-entry visa and residence status for foreign nationals of Indian origin; you keep your foreign passport and cannot vote in Indian elections or hold public office.
How much does an OCI card application cost in the USA in 2026?
USD 275 globally for a fresh application, plus a USD 3 Indian Community Welfare Fund charge and VFS Global service fees. Reissue for a passport update or age-20 change costs USD 25; a duplicate for a lost or damaged card costs USD 100. Confirm the current structure on VFS Global for your US jurisdiction.
What changed with OCI in 2026?
The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2026, introduced 30 April 2026, moved OCI to a digital, online-first e-OCI system, standardized the global application fee at USD 275, removed the six-month continuous-stay requirement for some in-country applicants, and clarified that a minor cannot hold an Indian passport and another country’s passport simultaneously.
How long does an OCI card application take to process?
Roughly 15 business days under the 2026 digital system, down from the previous 6–8 week norm. Foreign-spouse or verification-heavy applications can still take longer.
Can a Bangladeshi or Pakistani-origin applicant get an OCI card?
No. Individuals who are or have been citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh, or whose parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent held citizenship in those countries, are statutorily excluded from OCI eligibility, regardless of any other qualifying family link to India.
