TBC Express: Where Dhaka’s Appetite Meets Japan’s Flavor

From Doubt to Dhaka’s Dining Gem

When The Backyard Chef, more popularly known as TBC Express first opened its doors in Lalmatia back in 2015, the idea of sushi in this part of Dhaka raised eyebrows. Locals weren’t sure Japanese cuisine would find a home here. But owner Ahmed Jawad Rahman trusted his instincts.

“People told me serving sushi in this area would be a challenge, but they were happy we were doing something different,” he recalls.

Nearly a decade later, TBC has proved the doubters wrong. From one cozy Lalmatia spot to a newly opened branch in Uttara, it has become one of the city’s most beloved Asian dining destinations—where ramen bowls and sushi platters bring people together.

Behind the Kitchen, Beyond the Food

TBC isn’t just about food, it’s about people. From day one, Rahman trained his staff from scratch, turning newcomers into skilled sushi and ramen makers. “I tried to teach them holistically that it’s a craft,” he says.

The restaurant’s ethos is rooted in care: sauces, broths, and bases are made in-house, ensuring quality over shortcuts. This dedication shows in its steady online reputation, with nearly 1,000 Google reviews at the Lalmatia branch highlighting both the food and the warmth of the staff.

With the opening of its Uttara branch, TBC is expanding that sense of community—bringing sushi and ramen to more neighborhoods.
