Mahendra Soni: The Architect Behind India’s Bengali Cinema Global Footprint

📽️ A Builder Behind the Stories

For decades, Bengali cinema thrived on powerful storytelling but lacked large-scale industry structure. Mahendra Soni saw that gap early.

Growing up in Kolkata, he entered business at just fifteen. Over the years, alongside his cousin Shrikant, he helped transform Bengali entertainment from a fragmented space into a structured ecosystem.

Through SVF Entertainment and the streaming platform Hoichoi, Mahendra helped build one of the most influential regional entertainment networks in South Asia — reaching over 250 million Bengalis worldwide.

His work sits behind the scenes: producing films, scaling distribution, building music labels, launching Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, and creating systems where regional storytelling can thrive globally.

🎤 Q&A with Mahendra Soni

TINDS: Where did your story begin?

Mahendra: I grew up in a middle-class joint family in Kolkata. My mother tongue is Marwari, but Bengal shaped everything around me. I entered our family business at 15. Later, with my cousin Shrikant, I entered entertainment after noticing how under-structured the Bengali industry was.

🎯 TINDS: What does the SVF Entertainment ecosystem look like today?

Mahendra: SVF Entertainment is a full-stack studio producing films and series, distributing cinema, running theatres, managing SVF Music, and co-founding and director of the Bengali OTT platform Hoichoi.

💡 TINDS: What inspired you to build this business?

Mahendra: We felt Bengal deserved scale. The talent and stories existed, but the business side was fragmented. We believed creativity with discipline could build something long term.

🛠️ TINDS: What has been the biggest challenge in building this ecosystem?

Mahendra: Consistency. In entertainment, one Friday you’re celebrated, the next you’re questioned. Cash flows fluctuate and risks are constant. We survived by thinking in decades, not quarters.

🌍 TINDS: What impact are you trying to create with your work?

Mahendra: The goal is to scale regional stories globally. Creators should earn fairly and work in systems that respect talent. When IP is built and monetised properly, culture becomes stronger.

🚀 TINDS: Was there a turning point that changed everything?

Mahendra: Launching Hoichoi was a major shift. It pushed us to think digital, global, and data-first. Our audience was no longer just Kolkata — it was New Jersey, London, Dhaka.

🎨 TINDS: What makes your business model unique?

Mahendra: We understand the entire cycle — production, distribution, music, cinemas, and OTT. Seeing the full board helps us make sharper decisions.

💼 TINDS: How would you describe your leadership style?

Mahendra: Fast. I like speed. I expect ownership and avoidable mistakes bother me. But I back people long term if they’re committed and honest.

🎭 TINDS: What’s a common misconception about the entertainment industry?

Mahendra: People think it’s glamour. It’s actually contracts, numbers, release strategy, risk management, and constant pressure.

🧘 TINDS: How do you stay balanced as a founder?

Mahendra: I organise work into must-do, should-do, and nice-to-do. It helps reduce noise and stay focused.

🔮 TINDS: What’s next for you?

Mahendra: We’re building deeper IP in music and digital, expanding beyond Bengal, and investing in stronger tech systems across our ecosystem.
