What stands today as a pillar of Philadelphia culture began as a bridge between nations. Designed by modernist architect Junzō Yoshimura in 1953, this structure was originally crafted for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York to showcase post-war cultural friendship.
In 1958, it was meticulously relocated to Philadelphia. It remains a rare architectural gem, boasting a layered hinoki bark roof—a technique so specific it requires preservation specialists from Japan to maintain. It is the only roof of its kind in the United States.

Shofuso isn’t a look-and-leave museum; it is a layered experience where nature and design speak in harmony. Here is what makes a visit essential:
| Feature | Details |
| Hill-and-Pond Garden | A nationally ranked landscape with tiered waterfalls and vibrant koi. Designed for slow strolling and showcasing “shakkei” (borrowed scenery). |
| House & Veranda | Traditional shoin-zukuri style with tatami rooms and shoji screens. Sightlines frame the garden like living scrolls, echoing its mid-century origins. |
| Hands-On Culture | JASGP hosts rotating programs: tea ceremonies, ikebana flower arranging, cultural workshops, and seasonal festivals. |

Beyond the architecture, the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center serves as a living classroom. It blends post-war friendship with modern Philadelphia life, maintained by a dedicated team of curators and volunteers.
Visitors often describe it as a “cultural family,” where the pine-scented breeze and the rhythm of the tatami rooms create a sense of belonging. It is a space where local communities and international guests alike find a shared moment of peace.
