Botswana has unearthed a treasure – the second-largest diamond ever found. Weighing a staggering 2,492 carats, this massive gem is the largest discovery in over a century, since the legendary Cullinan Diamond in 1905. President Mokgweetsi Masisi presented the diamond to the public, expressing awe at its weight, saying, “I am lucky to have seen it in my time.”
The Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond made the remarkable find at the Karowe Mine using advanced X-ray technology. Karowe has delivered before; it has produced four other diamonds over 1,000 carats in the past decade. Lucara President William Lamb called the discovery “extraordinary,” marking yet another historic milestone for Botswana.
Previously, the Sewelo diamond, also from Karowe, held the title of second-largest diamond at 1,758 carats, and it was purchased by Louis Vuitton. Another notable diamond, Lesedi La Rona, fetched $53 million in 2017, while The Constellation set a record sale of $63 million.
This monumental discovery further solidifies Botswana’s reputation as a global diamond powerhouse. The nation has long been recognized for its contributions to the diamond industry, not only in terms of quantity but also in the quality of its finds. With each groundbreaking discovery, Botswana continues to attract attention from luxury brands, investors, and gem enthusiasts worldwide, reinforcing its position as a premier source of the world’s most sought-after diamonds.
Beyond the glimmering stones, the diamond industry has a profound impact on Botswana’s economy. Diamonds account for a significant portion of the nation’s GDP, providing employment opportunities and driving economic growth. The latest findings are expected to bring more investment into the country, further boosting its development and enhancing the living standards of its citizens. Botswana’s diamond legacy is one of prosperity, and this new gem adds another chapter to its enduring story.
