The flood crisis in Bangladesh has escalated to alarming levels, leaving over three million people stranded across eight districts. The most severely affected regions include Feni and Noakhali, where relentless rains and swollen rivers have caused widespread devastation.
In Feni, the situation has become dire. The upazilas of Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya are severely impacted. Rising water levels in the Chhota Feni River have submerged extensive areas in Feni Sadar and Daganbhuiyan upazilas.
Prolonged power outages have plagued the region since Tuesday night, and the Feni-Parshuram regional road has been rendered impassable. Reports indicate that at least one person is missing in Parshuram, with local infrastructure struggling to handle the overwhelming water influx. This flood has been described by locals as the worst in 37 years, with many houses now submerged.
Noakhali is also facing a worsening flood crisis due to continuous rainfall and tidal surges. Over 1.9 million people in eight upazilas, including Kabirhat, Senbagh, Companiganj, and Begumganj, are affected. Several municipalities are also struggling, with over 100,000 people experiencing severe disruptions.
In Cumilla, the situation has deteriorated as the Gumti and Muhuri rivers overflowed due to heavy rains and the opening of a sluice gate at Dumber Lake in Tripura, India. This flooding has impacted over 50,000 people in areas such as Adarsha Sadar, Burichang, Brahmanpara, Debidwar, and Muradnagar.
The floods in Brahmanbaria have brought tragic losses. A pregnant woman, Subarna Akhter, was swept away by floodwaters in Akhaura upazila. The Akhaura landport and at least 15 nearby villages have been submerged. Additionally, a Bailey bridge over the Kalundi canal collapsed, exacerbating the crisis.
In Habiganj and Moulvibazar, the flood situation has worsened as rivers like the Khowai, Kushiyara, Manu, Dhalai, and Juri overflow. More than 80,000 people are stranded, with 208 villages in Moulvibazar submerged.
The situation in Chattogram’s Fatikchhari upazila and surrounding areas has also deteriorated. The Halda River is flowing above the danger level, and a section of a dyke at the Shikder canal in Sitakunda Upazila has been damaged due to the influx of water.
Government Response
The interim government is actively addressing the crisis. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has assured the public of adequate preparations, while KM Ali Reza, additional secretary of the disaster management and relief ministry, has emphasized ongoing relief efforts and the distribution of essential supplies. Coordination with local administrations, volunteers, and the army is underway.
