The time has struck for the tropical winter wedding wonderland, and couples and their wedding crews are rushing to find “The One” attire from their forever dream. In chasing perfection, it is common to get overwhelmingly engrossed with famous foreign labels, but the authentic charm often lies in the local aesthetics.
Celebrating the creativity and adeptness of homegrown fashion brands, driven by Mercedes-Benz, TRESemmé presented the first-ever edition of Bangladesh Wedding Couture Week 2022 (BWCW).
Directed by Azra Mahmood, the magnificent show lasted three days, from 6th October to 8th October 2022, where three distinguished household names in fashion design, Sarah Karim Couture, Sahar Rahman Couture, and Zurhem, presented cutting-edge, outstanding attires with unique patterns and unexpected colours, blending in traditional as well as contemporary.
Partnered with Mohammad & Sons, Judith Leiber Couture, and The Jarwa House, the grand gala was graced by elegant and imminent guests, among which was Enrico Nunziata, the Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh. Everyone waited to be enraptured by the designers’ suave ensembles and ingenious visions of the three wedding events: holud, wedding, and reception.
Holud has always been one of the most exhilarating events in a wedding, traditionally dominated by the turmeric symbolic yellow. But BWCW, with its unique colour palette and pastel tones, brought a 21st Century twist to the golden heritage. On the other hand, the reception has become the fashion limelight, with guests wanting to put forth their best feet and stepping beyond the traditions with pristine patterns and serendipitous shades.

The ramp was opened by The Jarwa House, who reinforced the glorious gold at the top on the first two days with their intricate designs, spanning four generations. Covering all genres of exquisite and minimalistic, some with pure golden enamor, some enhanced with rubies, pearls, and jades. On the third day, they successfully experimented with silver, diamonds, and multicoloured gemstones to bring forth one-of-a-kind pieces.
Famous actress, Nusraat Faria, being the face of the esteemed jewellery house, looked show-stopping with a layered necklace, topped by a minimalist choker, complete with a pair of shimmering earrings, and mono-lined tikli.
Sahar Rahman Coture‘s lineup for holud highlighted the brand identity of vibrancy in the bridal dresses. With traditional and modern two pieces, in harmonious shades of red, blue, pink, orange, and green with both vibrant and pastel undertones, they marked the holud splendid. At the reception, they played with ornate embellishments over pastel palettes of pink, off-white, peach, and pale green to amalgamate the new and old.
Sarah Karim Couture‘s bridal and bridesmaid wear for Holud focused on practicality with gorgeousness. Enhanced mobility through delicate fabric like muslin, accentuating ‘gota patti’ designs with subtle mirror work over the net. Their lineup consisted of interesting colours like fuschia pink, lime green, and tinted yellow. Redefining the bridal red aesthetic, her wedding set featured shades of matte gold and wine, with subtle touches of magenta, pink, navy blue. Giving a tough competition to Indian designers, their delicate gold, sequin, and thread embroidery complemented the heavier Banarasi and Katan silk fabrics.
For the reception theme, they chose to make a statement with midnight blue ensembles and jewel undertones, along with fabulous georgette and chiffon fabrics in shades of silver and green, with delicate crystal and Kundan embellishments. Her crystal work on the Jamdani sari was the highlight of the set.
Finally, the groom side received their bold and dashing couture with Zurhem‘s collection. Mehruz Munir, Managing Director of the luxury menswear brand, captivated the audience with his unique floral patterns and iridescent palette of pastel pinks, whites, greens, and yellows. He went out-of-the-box for the wedding theme, with Mughal-inspired regal attires, with zardozi embroidery, and gold embellishments over a pastel palette.
His avant-garde takes on what grooms can rock transcended to the reception ramp, where he himself walked the ramp in a classy all-black suit and showcased his mettle with exclusive and excellent suits in classic monochrome embellished with creative geometric patterns in gold and silver.
The fabulous hair and makeup, courtesy of brilliant artists Navim Ahmed, Privé by Nahila Hedayet, and La’belle Beauty Salon accentuated the ensembles, with the right amount of minimalistic and intricate, to highlight the designs and overall look.
It suffices to say that BWCW did justice to their aim of drawing the wedding crews to embrace the local genius, pillaring the traditional wedding attires over the masterminds of Bangladeshi luxury labels. With mere weeks in hand, the designers, as well as involved parties, have truly outshone their innovations and proved that their quality craft is at par with any foreign fashion brand. BWCW has officially pioneered a new era of wedding fashion in Bangladesh.
